Photos for Booking.com: Checklist for Rooms, Bathrooms, and Common Areas

AI Property Photo Editorial TeamUpdated on

An effective gallery is not just a collection of pretty but disconnected images. It must help viewers recognize each space, understand which room they are choosing, and avoid confusing private, shared, or outdoor areas. This guide presents a preparation and review method suitable for B&Bs, apartments, vacation homes, and small hotels.

1. Start from the Actual Property Inventory

Before shooting, list all rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room, entryway, outdoor areas, and amenities available during the stay. For each space, note what must be clearly shown: layout, number of beds, access, view, useful features, or any sharing arrangements. This prevents galleries that have many living room pictures but no useful images of the second bedroom.

Make sure the room name, bed count, amenities, and photos all match. If a photo shows a closed sofa bed, it alone doesn’t explain where a guest will sleep; if a terrace is shared, both the caption and listing text must clarify that. Images do not replace the property information.

2. Photograph Rooms and Bathrooms so They’re Easily Recognizable

For each room type, select at least one overall shot that clearly shows the bed, pathways, and relationship to windows or bathroom. Add a second perspective only if it clarifies a specific feature—such as a second bed, desk, or wardrobe. Avoid extreme angles that distort the sense of size.

In the bathroom, show the layout, sink, shower or tub, and what is truly available. Clean mirrors and surfaces, watch for reflections, and avoid personal items in the frame. If a bathroom is outside the room or shared, don’t let this be implied only by the photo; ensure the name, description, and caption align.

3. Clearly Present Common Areas, Kitchen, and Outdoors

Living room, kitchen, breakfast area, terrace, pool, garden, and entrance should demonstrate how they’re used, not just decorative details. A kitchen photo should convey the workspace and available equipment; an outdoor shot must avoid making a shared space appear private. Remove temporary items and verify the season shown remains pertinent.

Organize the shots as a visit: cover photo, main space, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and auxiliary areas. Don’t duplicate nearly identical angles. Booking.com’s technical documentation distinguishes the property gallery from galleries by room type: even if you use the Extranet rather than an API, this is a good reason to keep files organized by space and room.

4. Choose the Main Photo and Check the Order

Pick a cover photo that stays clear as a thumbnail and showcases a genuine strength: a readable living room, a distinctive room, or a truly usable exterior. Avoid collages, overlaid text, abstract details, and images that promise an atmosphere different from the accommodation.

Booking.com notes that for integrations using its Photo API, it’s possible to set a main photo and manage the order; it may also apply smart ordering. Don’t assume your Extranet page settings work the same way: always check how the listing actually appears after uploads and update when possible.

5. Enhance Existing Photos Without Changing the Property

A sharp but dim photo can benefit from cautious adjustments to light, color, or perspective. Always compare the original and edited versions: windows, doors, furnishings, external views, surfaces, and perceived dimensions must stay true. Reject edits that add, remove, or alter elements of the space.

If a photo is blurry, very noisy, crops out important parts of a room, or hides key flaws, reshoot it. Editing and AI tools can make an existing photo more readable but don’t replace new photos when necessary information is missing. Importing or uploading to AI Property Photo does not automatically update Booking.com.

6. Checklist Before Publishing

Open the gallery on both phone and computer. Confirm every available space is shown, bedroom photos aren’t confused with each other, and the order, cover, and captions consistently describe the same property. Keep originals and note the publication dates of the versions used.

Format and upload limits depend on the channel used. Booking.com’s API documentation lists specific integration requirements, including file dimensions and types, but should not replace current Extranet instructions. Always verify the actual publishing workflow you follow.

Before Publishing

  • Each bedroom and bathroom is recognizable and consistent with its name.
  • Common areas and outdoor spaces correctly indicate if they are shared.
  • Furnishings, amenities, season, and view match the current property.
  • The cover photo is clear as a thumbnail and does not create misleading expectations.
  • There are no unnecessary duplicates, personal reflections, or private details.
  • The enhanced version was compared with the original before publishing.
