How to choose an Airbnb cover photo: examples and checklist

AI Property Photo editorial teamUpdated

The cover is the first image that introduces the property, but the most spectacular photo is not always the most effective. A good choice makes a real space recognizable even small, highlights a genuine strength and stays consistent with what the guest will find. This method helps compare multiple candidates without relying only on personal taste.

1. Create a shortlist of three clearly different photos

Pick a view of the main space, a characteristic bedroom and, if relevant, an exterior that is genuinely usable. Immediately discard blurred images, tilted verticals, decorative details without context and seasonal photos that no longer represent the property. Three distinct candidates make the choice clearer than ten nearly identical variants.

The cover must signal the type of stay. A studio is better explained by a wide, honest view; a house with a panoramic terrace can use an exterior shot only if that area is private, available and central to the guest experience.

2. Make sure it works as a thumbnail

Reduce each candidate to the size of a search card. The main subject should remain understandable without zooming. If a bed, table or terrace blends into the background, try a simpler crop or choose a different image.

Leave some space around the subject: interfaces and formats can cut the edges. Try a temporary square and a horizontal crop, then check the real display on phone and computer. Do not add text, collages or graphic elements that compete with the room.

3. Show a strength the property actually offers

An effective cover must not hide size, access or shared use. Colors, view, furnishings and light must remain believable. Avoid extreme wide angles and edits that change a window, remove a piece of furniture or make a shared area look private.

Ask what concrete promise the photo makes: relaxing on a terrace, a bright living room, a well-kept bedroom, sea access. The listing description and subsequent images must support the same promise. If the feature is seasonal, schedule a cover review when the situation changes.

4. Compare candidates using the same criteria

Give each photo a simple rating on five points: sharpness, light, recognizable subject, fidelity and resistance to cropping. The score does not measure bookings, but prevents an aesthetic preference from hiding a practical flaw.

If two images are equivalent, pick the one that adds more information and stands out from nearby covers without resorting to unnatural colors. Don’t change frequently just to chase results: note the date and reason for the choice so future revisions are comparable.

5. Improve the chosen photo without falsifying the space

A sharp photo can benefit from more balanced light, color and perspective adjustments. Compare the original and edited versions at the same size, checking windows, doors, furniture, fabrics and the view. Discard any version that adds or alters property elements.

If the candidate is blurred, relies on an extreme crop or shows heavy distortion, retake the shot. AI Property Photo lets you import or upload images and evaluate an enhanced version; it does not update Airbnb automatically and does not guarantee changes in ranking or bookings.

6. Final check on the listing

After uploading, open the page on phone and computer and verify the displayed crop. Also review the first images in the gallery: they should continue the story started by the cover without repeating the same view.

Platform interfaces can change. The linked Airbnb guidance explains the importance of clear photos and image selection, but the decisive check remains your listing's current preview.

Cover checklist

  • The subject remains recognizable in a thumbnail.
  • The shown strength is real and available.
  • Different crops do not remove the important area.
  • Lines, colors, furnishings and view remain faithful.
  • The photo connects well to the first gallery images.
  • The preview was checked on phone and computer.
